The significant figures (also known as the significant digits) of a number are digits that carry meaning contributing to its measurement resolution. This includes all digits except:[1]
All leading zeros;
Trailing zeros when they are merely placeholders to indicate the scale of the number (exact rules are explained at identifying significant figures); and
Spurious digits introduced, for example, by calculations carried out to greater precision than that of the original data, or measurements reported to a greater precision than the equipment supports.

Number of digits in a figure that express the precision of a measurement instead of its magnitude. In a measurement, commonly the in-between (embedded) zeros are included but leading and trailing zeros are ignored. Non-zero digits, and leading zeros to the right of a decimal point, are always significant.
