A telescope is a device that can gather together more light than the human eye. A human eye has a maximum opening of about 7mm in dim light which the lens of the eye focus to a small area on the cornea of the eye. A telescope uses a lens or a mirror of much larger size to focus light to a single point, where another set of lenses, acting as a magnifying glass, examines the image! Even though a 100mm lens or mirror telescope would be conspired small, compared to 7mm for the eye, think how much more light it gathers than the eye! The more light, the more information it contains!
Amature telescopes range up to about 400 to 500mm, with observatory scopes up to the tens of thousands of mm in diameter! Remember the more light the more information, so if you look at the moon with a 100mm scope, and magnify the image 100 times, the image will not be as clear as the image from a 1000mm telescope magnified the same 100 times!

Hope it help.
