Work is basically energy used to do something useful.  This is opposed to heat which is energy lost to thermal motion that cannot be used to do something useful.  Thermodynamics describes the relationship between work and heat and how energy in a system becomes unavailable to do work.

Units of work are
In the S.I., work is measured in Joules (J). 1 J = 1 N×× m==1 kg×ms2××ms2×m.

The rate of work (AKA power) is measured in Watts (W). 1 W = 1 JsJs.
