Let the first part be x and the second part be y.

Hence, 1/3x = y-40

y= 1/3x + 40

and

x+y =400

So  , y can be written as 1/3x + 40

(1/3x + 40)+ x = 400

1/3x + x = 360

4/3x = 360

x = 360* 3/4

x = 270

y = 1/3x + 40 = 130

so two part of 400 are 270 and 130.
