What is Base According to Bronsted lowry:
According to Bronsted lowry Concept , Base are proton acceptors. Eg,
NH3 + (H+) -- NH4+(Conjugate Acid)
Types of Bases :
On the basis of degree of dissociation bases are of two types.
• Strong base : Dissociates Completely even in Concentrated solution. Eg, KOH, NaOH
•Weak base : partially Dissociates in water.
eg, Mg(OH)2 , NH4(OH)
Bases Possess the following property.
- Tases react with metal to form salt with evolution of hydrogen gas.
- The reaction of base with acid known as neutralization reaction which lead to the formation of corresponding salt and water.
- Base react with non metallic oxide to form salt and water.
- Basis on dissolving in water give Hydroxide ions
All the bases do not dissolve in water. The bases which dissolve in water is known as alkali. All alkalis are bases but all the bases are not alkalis.
