A cell is building block of life. A cell is the structural and functional unit life . A singular cell can perform all the basic life activities (respiration,digestion, etc ) .

Cells were discovered by Robert Hooke (English scientist) in 1665. He examined a thin slice of bottle cork under his crude microscope . He saw compartments divided by walls and he named them as 'cell'( from Latin word cellula, which means 'a little room).
