Democracy, which derives from the Greek word demos, or people, is defined, basi- cally, as government in which the supreme power is vested in the people. In some forms, democracy can be exercised directly by the people; in large societies, it is by the people through their elected agents.

(i) Democratic rights are not limited to political rights like, the right to vote, to stand in elections and form political organisations. A democracy should grant some social and economic rights to its citizens. (ii) The power sharing in democracy is extended to the power sharing between government and social groups.
