simple machine, any of several devices with few or no moving parts that are used to modify motion and the magnitude of a force in order to perform work. The simple machines are the inclined plane, lever, wedge, wheel and axle, pulley, and screw.

A tool that helps us to do our work with less effort is called a simple machine. there are six types of simple machines.

(i) lever : A lever is a rigid rod arranged in such a manner that it can move freely around a fixed point .

Eg: Scissors,Nut cracker, Fishing rod

(ii) Wheel and Axle : A wheel and axle consist of a wheel rigidly attached to a rod called axle.

Eg: door knob, steering wheel of a car

(iii) Pulley : A pulley consists of a wheel with a

grooved rim and a rope , a chain, or a belt running around the grooves.

Eg : Pulley in crane, flag pole

(iv) Inclined plane : An inclined plane is a slope with one and higher than the other .

Eg: ramps in the hospital ,slides in a playground

(v) Wedge : A wedge is a double incline plane and one end is sharp and the other blunt . it is used to cut things.

Eg : Knife, Axe

(vi) Screw : It is an incline plane wrapped around a straight rod like structure . it is used to hold things together.

Eg : Screw Jack, Bottle cap
