Question :-
Define about increasing crop yield.
Answer :-
The crop yield refers to both, the measure of yield of crop per unit area and the seed generation of the plant. In order to increase the crop yield it is essential to carry out the basic agricultural practices in a systematic manner. Techniques such as mixed cultivation and crop rotation are more in practice this is to bring a hike in the crop yield. Now, let us see how this method are being applied in the fields :
1. Mixed Cultivation :-
In mixed cultivation, a number approx are grown together in the same season which are all all interdependent on each other for their nutritional requirements. For example, in the coffee plantations, two types plants are grown in the same season. They are copy and tall trees to provide shade for the coffee plant.
2. Crop Rotation :-
Crop rotation is the practice of growing two or more dissimilar crops in the same field one after the other .
A particular crop has a specific requirement of a nutrient . The soil becomes nutrient deficiency if a particular crop is grown on the same field year after year. Thus, in order to replenish the soil with nutrients different crops should be grown alternatively. For examples of crops such as wheat and paddy require a lot of nitrogen from the soil. This lost nitrogen can be replenished by the leguminous plants such as pea. The leguminous plants such as peas, lentils, beans, etc are the plants that have special Bacteria known as Rhizobium in the root nodules that helps in restoring the nitrogen content of the soil. The bacteria restore the nitrogen with the help of the process called nitrogen fixation.
