Definition:

The refractive index of a medium with respect to vacuum is known as absolute refractive index.

It is represented as n.

Additional information:

In terms of speed of light in the medium and in vacuum,

n = c / v,

where

c = speed of light in vacuum ≈ 3 × 10 ^ 8 m/s

v = speed of light in the medium
