Answer:

  • Acid rain is a rain or any other form of precipitation that is unusually acidic, meaning that it has elevated levels of hydrogen ions.
  • When acid rain falls down and flows into the rivers and ponds it affects the aquatic ecosystem.
  • As it alters the chemical composition of the water, to a form which is actually harmful to the aquatic ecosystem to survive and causes water pollution.
  • Acid rain also causes the corrosion of water pipes.

Acid rain:-

Acid rain is any form of precipitation with acidic components, such as sulfuric or nitric acid that fall to the ground from the atmosphere in wet or dry forms. Power stations, factories and cars all burn fuels and therefore they all produce polluting gases. Some of these gases (especially nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide) react with the tiny droplets of water in clouds to form sulphuric and nitric acids. It adversely affects forests, buildings, water bodies, etc.

Disadvantages:-

  • They change the acidity level of the soil by leaching crucial nutrients. Thus it affects forest vegetation.

  • Other ecosystems such as forests and desert will also be harmed. Loss of
  • biodiversity and the extinction of rare species will occur.

  • If ocean temperature increases, the growth of coral reefs will be affected. The corals control the proportion of carbon dioxide by turning CO2 in the water to limestone shell. Moreover, coral reefs grows in temperature just above 10° Celsius.

  • The most basic microscopic organisms such as plankton may not be able to survive. So the sea animals, depending on planktons will die and the food chain will be affected.
