.. Define adsorption with an example. What is the role of adsorption in
heterogeneous catalysis

Answer:
Adsorption is a process which involves the accumulation of a substance in molecular species in higher concentration on the surface. If we look at Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Oxygen, these gases adsorb on activated charcoal. Meanwhile, we have to note that adsorption is different from absorption. The two processes involve totally different mechanisms.Common examples of adsorbents are clay, silica gel, colloids, metals etc.
Those catalytic process in which the reactant and catalyst are in a different phase is known as heterogeneous catalysis.
Role of adsorption in heterogeneous catalysis-
Diffusion of reactants to the surface of the catalyst.
Adsorption of reactant is on the surface of the catalyst.
The chemical reaction can occur at the catalyst surface by intermediate formation between them.
Desorption of the product of the reaction is also at the surface of the catalyst.
