The course is part of the activities defined by aMemorandum of Understanding between FAO and the Italian Government for the promotion of the GIAHS program, based on the experience of Italy in the establishment of the National Register of Historical Rural Landscapes and Traditional Agricultural Practices, but also on rural landscape conservation and food quality. The course is a part of a larger research project aimed at developing a high-level training center on agricultural heritage systems based the Laboratory for Landscape and Cultural Heritage (CULTLAB) based at the School of Agriculture of the University of Florenceand also identifying potential GIAHS sites in the countries of the Abroad Program of the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development, in Africa, Asia and South America. The laboratory has been in charge of developing the National Register of Historical Rural Landscape based at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies and has also been involved in the definition of strategies and actions for the National Strategic Plan for Rural Development. The CULTLAB has also been in charge of the developing management plans for the agricultural landscape of the UNESCO World Heritage and has carried out studies for the identification of potential GIAHS sites in Italy. Since 2012, the Laboratory has developed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Secretariat of the GIAHS program for the mutual cooperation in the field of agricultural heritage.
