The total area of the Union Territory Chandigarh is 114 Sq. Kms. At the time of the formation of the Union Territory of Chandigarh in the year 1966, the cultivated area was 5441 hectares, which has now been reduced to 1250 hectares due to continued acquisition of agriculture land for urbanization of the Chandigarh city. The farmers of the Union Territory Chandigarh who keep a large number of milch cattle because of the heavy consumption of milk with in the Union Territory Chandigarh and for this reason, the farmers of the Chandigarh have taken to fodder cultivation in large scale to cater the need of milch cattle. Due to the reason, the area under cultivation of other crops has reduced to negligible and fodder has become the main crop in the Union Territory Chandigarh. The crop of fodder hardly requires any pesticides. Manure is available in plenty with the farmers. The Agriculture Department provides technical know-how though personal contact about the use of specific pesticides for particular crop and also to guide about its use so that there would be no adverse affect of uses of such pesticides. Since the farmers of Union Territory Chandigarh is also using the agriculture produce for their domestic purpose and they are very much aware about the adverse affect of such pesticides.
