Algae -

  • It is a simple, autotrophic, thalloid and chlorophyll bearing organism.
  • It is an aquatic organism.
  • They mostly live in moist conditions.
  • Some of them occur in association with fungi and animals.
  • The form and size is highly variable.
  • It can be found in microscopic unicellular form like chlamydomonas.
  • It can also be found in colonial form like volvox.
  • It can also be found in filamentous form like ulothrix and Spirogyra.

Reproduction -

  • It can reproduce in three ways that is vegetative reproduction, asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction.
  • In vegetative type of reproduction, fragmentation occurs. The body is divided into fragments which develops into a thallus.
  • In asexual reproduction production of sports occur. Example - Zoospores. These flagellated and motile and germinate to give rise to new plants.
  • In sexual reproduction, fusion of two garments occurs. There are 3 types; isogamous, anisogamous, and oogamous.
  • Isogamous is the fusion of gametes which are similar in size and they can be flagellated or non flagellated. If they are flagellated they are motile (Like : Ulothrix) and if they are non flagellated they are non motile (Like : Spirogyra).
  • Anisogamous is the fusion of gametes of dissimilar size which are flagellated. Like, Eudornia.
  • Oogamous is the fusion between one large non motile female gamete and a smaller motile male gamete. Like, Volvox and Fucus.
