Define alkali metals and alkaline earth metals

Alkali metals have one electron in thier outermost shell while alkaline earth metals have two electrons in thier outermost shell. Thus alkali metals have to loose one electron to reach the noble gas configuration while alkaline earth metals have to loose two electrons to get the noble gas configuration.
