Explanation:

Alkaloids any of a class of nitrogenous organic compounds of plant origin which have pronounced physiological actions on humans. They include many drugs (morphine, quinine) and poisons (atropine, strychnine).

Datura stramonium

Datura is a type of plant that belongs to the family Solanaceae. It grows in sandy areas mainly in southwestern America, in Mexico, and in the Mediterranean countries. The most important species of Datura are Datura innoxia, also known as “angel’s trumpet,” Datura metel, Datura discolor (also known as “moon flower”), and Datura stramonium, also known as ”Jimson weed” and “zombie’s cucumber.” The Aztecs knew the species D. stramonium and D. innoxia and named them as “Tlapatl” and “Mixitl,” respectively. In 1596, the herbalist Li-Shih-Chen mentioned the therapeutic properties of the plant, named Man-t’-o-lo. The flowers and the seeds of the plant were used externally for the treatment of skin rash of the face and per os for the treatment of neurological disorders. It is considered to be an important anesthetic when consumed along with cannabis in wine. In India, it is given as an offering to God Shiva, the god of disaster.

Less-known Datura species are D. ceratocaula and D. ferox, which both have hallucinogenic properties.

Datura stramonium (Figures 18 and 19) is found mostly in India and in Central America. Nowadays, the Church of Native Americans in the United States of America uses this plant in certain rituals, but the Hindus also use it as “a tool for the spirit.” Native Americans support that Datura stramonium was planted by Lucifer himself, in a night with full moon, in order to take revenge on people. That is supposedly the reason why the plant grows between garbage and drainage systems.

  • The active principles are alkaloids such as hyoscine (scopolamine), hyoscyamine, and atropine.
  • Poisoning occurs only if seeds are masticated and swallowed. It is bitter in taste and can initially lead to stimulation of higher centers of brain. Later the vital centers are depressed followed by death due to respiratory paralysis.
