There are two main types of software: systems software and application software. Systems software includes the programs that are dedicated to managing the computer itself, such as the operating system, file management utilities, and disk operating system (or DOS).

1) Operating system software = the operating system software is a soft ware which creates an interface between user and computer and make hard ware make all components run in an efficient way.

operating system software is categrised in four types:-

✨ singleuser OS

✨ multiuser OS

✨ batchprocessing OS

✨ multiprocessing OS

I) singleuser OS = the operating system which allow single user is called single user OS.


ii) multiuser OS = the operating system which allow the multiple users is called multiusers operating system


iii) batchprocessing OS = A type of operating system which process group of jobs is called batchprocessing OS.


Iv) multiprocessing OS = A type of operating system which handles multiple cpu at the same time is called multiprocessing OS.

2) Language processor = A type of software which converts program code to machine code.


it is categrised in three types :-

✨ Assembler

✨ interpretor

✨ compiler

I) Assembler :- A type of language processor which converts assembly language to machine language.

ii) interpretor :- A type of language processor which converts high level language into the machine language by checking the code line by line.
if any error found in particular line in that particular line the conversion process will stop till the line is error free.

iii) compiler :- it is a type of language processor which also converts high level language into machine language . it checks the whole coding at a time and mark the errors by line numbers after all errors were remove then the whole coding will compiled.

3) Application software = A type of software which is installed in the computer for performing some specific task .


Application software are categorised into two types :-

✨ bespoke application software

✨ Generic application software

I) bespoke application software :- A type of application software which is installed in the computer keeping the users requirements to doing any specific task.

ii) Generic application software :- A type of application software which is install the application required to do that specific task.
