When a metal is mixed with another element, which may be a metal or a non metal such that a new substance of homogeneous composition is obtained, the substance obtained is known as an alloy. An alloy is thus a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals, or a metal and a non metal. The properties of an alloy are different from that of combining elements. For example when iron is mixed with Carbon, nickel and chromium, stainless steel is obtained which is hard and does not rust.

an alloy is a mixture of two or more metal or one metal and a non metal(usually carbon)
for example
solder is an alloy of tin and lead
magnalium is an alloy of magnesium and aluminium.
