Definition of ammonification. 1 : the act or process of ammoniating. 2 : decomposition with production of ammonia or ammonium compounds especially by the action of bacteria on nitrogenous organic matter.

During ammonification, the plant or animal that you are a part of dies. You are left to be converted back into ammonium by decomposers (bacteria and fungi that break down dead organisms). You are returned back into the soil and can then reenter the cycle.

The process of the production of ammonia from organic compounds is called ammonification (figure 1). In addition to the ammonification of amino acids, other compounds such as nucleic acids, urea, and uric acid go through the ammonification process. ... Add the soil to a tube of Peptone Broth (Ammonia Forming Broth).
