`\textbf{Amphoteric Oxide}`

The metal oxides which react with both acid and base to produce salt and water is known as Amphoteric Oxide.

`\textbf{Examples of Amphoteric Oxide}`

1) Aluminum Oxide = Al2O3

2) Zinc Oxide = ZnO

`\textbf{Reaction of Al2O3 with acid}`

Al2O3 + 6(HCl) -----› 2(AlCl3) + 3(H2O).

`\textbf{Reaction of Amphoteric Oxide with base}`

Al2O3 + 2(NaOH) -------› 2(NaAlO2) + H2O.

\textbf{Amphoteric Oxide }

Some metals oxides shows both acidic as well as basic character.

These metal oxides are called Amphoteric oxides.

Basic character examples :

ZnO + H2SO4 ---> ZnSO4 + H2O

Al2O3 + 6HCl ---> 2AlCl3 + 3H2O

Acidic character examples :

ZnO + 2NaOH ---> Na2ZnO2 + H2O

Al2O3 + 2NaCl ----> 2NaAlO3 + H2O
