1)the number of protons and neutrons in the atom is called atomic mass
2)the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which is characteristic of a chemical element is called atomic number
3)for example in chlorine 35 is atomic mass and 17 is atomic number

hey!
•atomic mass =no of neutrons + no protons
• it is denoted by letter A
( as electrons have negligible mass , so its obvious that protons and neutrons will have mass)
example - chlorine mass is 35.5g
helium mass no is 4 g
_____________________________
•atomic no = no of protons
•no protons = no of electrons (in a neutral atom so we can also write atomic no = no of electrons)
it is denoted by letter Z
eg -
chlorine atomic no is 17
helium atomic no is 2
