The average speed is the total distance travelled in a given time frame and velocity is the total displacement in the time frame. The magnitude of average velocity and average speed will be the same when the total distance travelled is equal to the displacement.

Average speed:

  • Average speed is defined as the ratio of total distance to the total time taken to cover the distance.

  • Avg speed = Total distance/Total time.

Average velocity:

  • Average velocity is define as a ratio of total displacement to the total time .

  • Avg velocity = Total Displacement/Total time.

Average velocity = Average speed only in 1 condition:

  • The particle must travel in one direction, i.e. should not change directions.
