Basic Metabolic rate is the minimal energy spent in maintaining the metabolism of the body.  It is expressed in Joules/sec. 

The energy required to maintain the basic life functions of the (animal) body, like respiration, blood circulation, cell growth, periodic contractions of muscles, nerve cells functioning, brain function etc.

This will be the energy spent by an animal body at rest. It is also expressed in cal/sec.
