Define Base and alkali. Give example.

\textbf{Base}:

A compund which gives free hydroxide ions (OH-) when dissolved in water is called a base.

For example, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Carbonate etc.

\textbf{Alkali}:

Bases that are soluble in water are called alkali.

For example, Sodium Hydroxide, Calcium Hydroxide etc.
