Hey

So your question is that :-

What is base ?

Well , there are three concepts behind this .

Lemme explain all .

# ARREHINUS CONCEPT #

:- This concept says that , if any hydrogen containing compound releases ( OH - ) ions or hydroxide ions in its aqueous solution , then that substance is said to be Base .

For eg :- NaOH ( Sodium hydroxide )

# BRONSTED - LOWRY CONCEPT #

:- This states that , the substance which receives hydrogen ions ( H+ ) ions in a reaction is known as base .

For eg :- NH3 ( Ammonia )

# LEWIS CONCEPT #

:- This states that , the substance which donates the electron in a reaction is known as base .

For eg :- BF3 ( Bromine fluoride )

Now ,

→ → Alkali :- The types of base which are soluble in water is known as alkali .

Eg :-

NaOH ( Sodim hydroxide )

KOH ( potassium hydroxide )

All alkali comes in the category of base .

But since all base are not soluble in water , so all bases are not alkali .

thanks :)
