As these toxic substances can neither be excreted nor metabolised, so the toxic substances accumulate and pass on to higher trophic levels. DDT and MERCURY are well known for biomagnification.
Biomagnifications of DDT in an aquatic food chain causes the increase in concentration of DDT at successive tropic levels. High concentrations of DDT disturb calcium metabolism in birds, which causes thinning of eggshell and their premature breaking, eventually causing decline in bird populations.

It is a process by which a TOXIC pollutant increase its concentration in tissue of the organism as it travels higher level in food chain.
- The other name Biomagnification is BIOLOGICAL MAGNIFICATION and BIOAMPLIFICATION.
- The effect of DDT on fish eating birds are very high because they are at the Highest level of the chain.
- When fish eating birds , eat fish they increase the concentration of DDT in them ,which cause the thinning of shell of egg ,and premature breaking of egg.Leads to death .
