BOD is the biological oxygen demand....
when there is more organic matter in sewage.. there will be high BOD...
the BOD decrease with decrease in organic matter...

BOD stands for Biological Oxygen Demand. It is the amount of dissolved oxygen required by aerobic organisms to break down organic material present in the water.

Sewage discharge contains organic matter, when the sewage is discharged into a water body, the bacteria present in the water decompose the organic matter in the sewage and for this, large amount of dissolved oxygen is consumed by the bacteria. This results in the increase of BOD. Increase in BOD affects the aquatic life like aquatic plants and fishes dwelling in that water body since they will face lack of dissolved oxygen.
