Buffer solution is comprised of a weak base or weak acid which is accompanied by its conjugate salt. On adding a limited amount of weak acid or base, the pH of buffer solution might change.

Whenever a limited amount of strong base or strong acid is added to the buffer solution, the buffer resists the changes in the pH of the solution.

Buffer solutions are mainly of two types:

● Acidic Buffer solutions

● Alkaline Buffer solutions

Acidic Buffer solutions are those which have a pH below 7 and contains weak acid and its conjugate salt.

Alkaline Buffer solutions on other hand have pH above the value of 7 and constitutes of a weak base and its conjugate salt.

Solutions that do not show any change in the value of pH when few drops of acids or base are added to them are called as buffer solutions.
