The amount of blood the heart pumps through the circulatory system in a minute. The amount of blood put out by the left ventricle of the heart in one contraction is called the stroke volume. The stroke volume and the heart rate determine the cardiac output.

Answer :-

In general terms, Cardiac output (CO) can be defined as the volume of blood ejected from the left ventricle or the right ventricle into the aorta (pulmonary trunk) per minute.

Extra Information :-

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Cardiac output (CO) = Stroke volume (SV) × Heart rate (HR) = 70 ml × 75/min = 5250 ml / min = about 5L / min
  • Stroke volume depends mainly on venous return i.e. the amount of the blood delivered to the heart by the veins.
  • According to "Frank-Starling's law of heart" if more amount of blood is delivered to the heart by the veins, more blood is pumped by the heart.
  • Cardiac output is not constant as it varies with the physical activity.
  • The difference between the maximum cardiac output and the resting cardiac output is called "Cardiac reserve".
  • People with severe heart diseases may have little or no cardiac reserve.
  • People with severe heart diseases have little tolerance towards physical exertion.
