Caste and the attributional approach to the study of caste in India:

  • A caste system is a class which was determined by birth.
  • In other words it is a kind of social group that includes the people with same economic status.
  • Caste is a form of class structure that is specified at the time of birth.
  • It means that if you family is poor the siblings would also be poor. The same logic applies if you are rich.
  • The caste system in India is based on an attribution approach formulated by Ghurye.
  • They are elementary  division of society, religious and cultural disabilities coupled with privileges, civil and hierarchy.
  • The exclusions are cultural notions of purity along with pollution.
  • This attribute approach determines the qualities of restriction which comes under the beliefs of every caste.
  • It also determines the segmental division, caste restrictions, caste pollution and endogamy.
