A substance which increases the rate of chemical reaction without taking part in the reaction is known as Catalyst . Most of the transition elements (d-block elements) acts as a Catalysts . Due to prescence of vacant d-orbitals and variable oxidation states. Catalyst is neither a reactant nor a product.

Let's see some examples in which catalysts are used .

Example(1) : Thermal decomposition of KClO₃

\large\cdot\:{\boxed{\red{\rm{2KClO_3\longrightarrow\:2KCl+3O_2}}}}

In this case , Manganese oxide is used as a catalyst.

Example(2) : In the formation of Ammonia i.e , NH₃ by haber's process

\large\cdot\:{\boxed{\red{\rm{2N_2+3H_2\longrightarrow\:2NH_3}}}}

In this case , Iron is used as the catalyst.

Example(3) : Industrial preparation of Nitric acid.

\large\cdot\:{\boxed{\red{\rm{3NO_2+H_{2}O\:\longrightarrow\:2HNO_3+NO}}}}

In this case , Platinum catalyst is used.
