It is the structural and functional unit of life. It carries out various life functions and is present in each and every living thing. It is the smallest part of the body which has the ability to exist independently. Their number vary from one to millions depending upon the size of the organism. Every cell has its own life. Old and weak cells die regularly and are replaced by new cells. It has many organelles found embedded in its cytoplasm. The names of those organelles are mentioned below:
1. Mitochondria
2. Golgi Body
3. Endoplasmic Reticulum(ER)
4. Nucleus
5. Plasma Membrane(Cell Membrane)
6. Cell Wall(Present in plant cells only!)
7. Ribosomes
8. Lysosomes
9. Centrosomes(Present in animal cells only!)
10. Plastids(Present in plant cells only)
11. Nucleolus
12. Chromatin Fibres
14. Vacuoles(Generally not present in animals cells but if present then they are very small)
15. Granules
Most importantly, all organisms including ourselves start life as a single cell. Some important notes about cells:
1. Human red blood cells are biconcave and circular in shape because they have to pass through narrow capillaries in order to transport oxygen.
2. Nerve cells are long because they are destined to conduct impulses from various parts of our body to brain and vice-versa.
3. White blood cells are amoeboid because they have to pass through narrow capillary walls.
4. Guard cells of stomatal pore in leaves of plants are bean-shaped so that they can open and close the pore at right time.
