Cells were not discovered until the invention of the microscope. The Dutch scientist Anton Van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) developed the first simple microscope. It was made up of single lens. The use of this microscope enabled him to see blood cells in the capillaries of the webbed foot of a frog. However, he did not call them cells.
Robert Hooke (1635-1703) an English scientist used two lenses to devise a compound microscope. He studied a thin slice of cork under his microscope and observed small box-like structures in it. He called them cells.
