  • The cell membrane is a biological membrane that separates the interior of all cells from the outside environment which protects the cell from its environment.
  • Cell membrane is consisted of a lipid bilayer, including cholesterols that sit between phospholipids to maintain their fluidity under various temperature, in combination with proteins such as integral proteins, and peripheral proteins that go across inside and outside of the membrane serving as membrane transporter, and loosely attached to the outer side of the cell membrane acting as several kinds of enzymes shaping the cell, respectively.

☆Definition:

Cell membrane or Plasma membrane is the outer covering of plant cell and is present inside the animal cell.It is thin, elastic, transparent and electron microscopic membrane.

Chemical analysis has shown that plasma membrane is made up of about 75% of phospholipids. The fluid mosaic model suggested by Singer and Nicolon sataed the ultra structure of the plasma membrane. It states that it is made up of bilayer of proteins.

Functions:

  • plasma membrane allows sone selective substances to in and out of the cell . so for this reason,it is also called as selective permeable membrane.
  • It also performs some physical processes like diffusion and osmosis.
