Chemical equation - It is the symbolic representation of chemical reaction in terms of symbols and formulas of reactant and product.

Types of chemical equation :

1) Word equation - It is chemical equation in which reactants and products are written by using their names.

Example : Hydrogen + Oxygen \longrightarrow Water

2) Symbolic equation - It is the equation in which reactants and products are written in terms of symbols and formula.

It is of two types :

  • Unbalanced equation - The equation in which number of atoms present in reactant is not equal to the number of atoms present in product.
  • example - H_2 + O_2 \longrightarrow H_{2}O
  • Balanced equation - It is the equation in which number of atoms present in reactant is equal to the number of atoms present in product.
  • example - 2H_2 + O_2 \longrightarrow 2H_{2}O

3)Ionic equation - It is the equation in which reactants and products are written in the form of their ions.
