The Chipko movement or Chipko Andolan was to save trees or conservation of forests in India where people prevent trees from being cut down. It began in April 1973 in Reni village of Chamoli district, Uttarakhand and went on to become a rallying point for many future environmental movements all over the world.
Heya,
A similar movement to save trees in the seventies was known as the Chipko movement, derived from the Hindi word 'chipko', meaning to stick, where batches of men and women, led by the grassroots environmental acitivist Sunderlal Bahuguna, embraced and stuck to trees to prevent them from being felled.
Sunderlal Bahuguna, a noted environmentalist who initiated the Chipko Movement, was born on January 9, 1927. The man who has been fighting for the preservation of forests in the Himalayas celebrates his 90th birthday today. Bahuguna is also known for coining the Chipko slogan 'ecology is permanent economy'.
