- They are a type of Algae.
- They are unicellular or filamentous.
- The common name of chlorophyceae is green algae.
- They are usually grass green.
- They have the presence of pigments chlorophyll a and b like in higher plants.
- The chloroplast may be discoid, plate like, reticulate, cup shaped, spiral or ribbon shaped in different species.
- They have the presence of paranoids which are the storage bodies located in chloroplast and they contain protein besides starch.
- Some of the chlorophyceae store food as oil droplets.
- They have rigid cell wall and are made up of cellulase layer and outer pectose layer.
- They may have 2 to 8 flagella of equal size.
- Example - Volvox, Ulothrix, Chara, etc.
- The vegetative type of reproduction in chlorophyceae takes place by fragmentation and formation of spores.
- The asexual type of reproduction takes place flagellated zoospores produced in zoosporangia.
