coal and petroleum both are fossil fuels and they take millions of years for their formation.

coal is made up of dead plants and trees. then the dead and decaying plants get burried under the layer of soil, and under large force and pressure, it gets converted into coal.

petroleum is formed by dead aquatic animals. when the dead aquatic animals get burried in the sea, under high pressure they get converted into petroleum..
