A number used to multiply a variable. Example: 6z means 6 times z, and "z" is a variable, so 6 is a coefficient. Variables with no number have a coefficient of 1. Example: x is really 1x. Sometimes a letter stands in for the number.

FOR EXAMPLE :  If a, b, and r are real numbers (and if a and b are not both equal to 0) then ax+by = r is called a linear equation in two variables. (The “two variables” are the x and the y.) The numbers a and b are called the coefficients of the equation ax+by = r
