Conrotatory Ring Closure

A conrotatory ring closure is symmetry allowed because like phases of the p orbitals overlap to form the new σ bond of the ring. In the conrotatory ring closure, one methyl group is pushed down and one methyl group is pushed up, making them trans in the product.
