Answer:

The newest and heaviest addition to the periodic table – element 112 – is to be called Copernicium (Cp) in honour of Nicolaus Copernicus, who discovered that the Earth orbits the Sun, and died in 1543.

A team led by Sigurd Hofmann at the Centre for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) in Darmstadt, Germany made the first atom of element 112 in 1996 by firing a beam of zinc atoms at a piece of lead. However, the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) did not officially recognise it until June 2009, following the long process of proving that the element had indeed been synthesised.

Hofmann’s team was subsequently invited to choose the name. However, IUPAC must still officially endorse “Copernicium”, after it is reviewed by various bodies, before it is actually added to the periodic table.
