Define corrosion and factors influencing corrosion process. (Pharmaceutical Engineering)
Answers
Corrosion in simple terms is a process of an artificially purified metal reverting back to it's naturally stable state.
There are several factors causing and influencing corrosion, some of which are enlisted below :-
• Moisture in the surrounding.
It is the most common type of corrosion observed in nature.
• Difference in pH level
• Difference in oxygen levels ( waterline corrosion )
Most commonly observed in the ships.
• Difference in electrical charge across two terminals of a container
This is a lesser known type but is very eminent and also is easily reversible.
• Stress corrosion - If excess unbearable pressure is acting on the body, then due to embrittlement, the container might crack down.

When a metal is atacked by its surrounding air , moisture , acid etc it is said to be corroded . The process is called corrosion.
Electrochemical corrosion of metals occurs when electrons from atoms at the surface of the metal are transferred to a suitable electron acceptor or depolarizer. Water must be present to serve as a medium for the transport of ions.
