Metals are exposed to moisture,acids etc.,they tarnish due to the formation of respective metal on their surface,this process is called corrosion

When metals like iron, copper, silver exposed in humid atmosphere, where is water droplets present or exposed in acid, the metal get oxidized into their respective metal oxide.
Metal + O₂ ---------> Metal oxide
It is also a oxidation reaction.
That is called corrosion. It weakens the metal strength.
In case of iron, corrosion is called rusting of iron.
