- Crops are classified on the basis of the seasons: Kharif and Rabi and ziad crops.
- Kharif crops (Monsoon crops): The crops which are grown during the monsoon (rainy season) are called kharif crops. Seeds of the crops are sown in the beginning of the monsoon season. After maturation, these crops are harvested at the end of the monsoon season (Oct-Nov). Example: Paddy, maize, millet and cotton crops

- Zaid crops : In India, the crops grown on irrigated lands which do not have to wait for monsoons, in the short duration between Rabi and Kharif crop season, mainly from March to June(summer), are called Zaid crops. Examples- Musk-melon, Water-melon, gourd, etc.
