Crossed cheques:

Two parallel transverse lines on the face of the cheque on top left hand corner of the cheque with or without any words are known as crossing.

The purpose of crossing is to make payment to the payee/holder of the cheque through his account with any bank

By this procedure, safety of funds is ensured

Uncrossed cheques are known as open cheques

In this case, the cheque is equivalent to currency. Currency can be used by anybody. Similarly cheques payable to bearer can be encashed by any holder of the cheque and by making payment to the holder of the cheque, the bank cannot held liable for making payment
