Answer: Electrolysis of water is its decomposition to give hydrogen and oxygen gases due to the passage of an electric current. 2 H2O + electrical energy (+ heat energy) O2 + 2 H2. Electric effects on water.A decomposition reaction occurs when one reactant breaks down into two or more products. ... Examples of decomposition reactions include the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen, and the breakdown of water to hydrogen and oxygen.

Take a glass beaker fix two electrodes. The positive electrode acts as anode &negative electrode act as cathode. Fill 1/3 of beaker with water. Take two test tubes. Insert on electrodes. Observe the level of water in the test tubes. Connect the electrodes to a battery. Pass the electricity for a period of time. Later switch off the current and observe the level of water in test tubes. The level of water in the test tubes is decreased. The free space in the test tubes is filled with H2 & O2 gases. Oxygen gas is evolved at anode and hydrogen gas released at cathode.

I hope this is correct
