Democracy has its origin from Greek language.

It is a combination of two Greek words -

'Demos' and 'Kratos'

  • 'Demos' literary means 'Population'
  • 'Kratos' literary means 'Power'

The literal meaning of democracy is population with power or 'RULE OF CITIZENS '.

According to Abraham Lincoln, "Democracy is a government of the people, by the people, and for the people."

Dr. BR Ambedkar was a 'firm believer' of democracy.

He also the demarked the criteria of democracy;

(1) there should not be glaring inequalities in society, that is, privilege for one class;

(2) the existence of an opposition;

(3) equality in law and administration;

(4) observance of constitutional morality;

(5) no tyranny of the majority;

(6) moral order of society;

(7) public conscience.

FACT : Winston Churchill (Ex-Prime Minister of the United Kingdom) once said that "Democracy is the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." (1947)
