Answer:

Explanation:

The electric dipole moment is a measure of the separation of positive and negative electrical charges within a system, that is, a measure of the system's overall polarity. The SI units for electric dipole moment are coulomb-meter (C⋅m); however, a commonly used unit in atomic physics and chemistry is the debye (D).

Theoretically, an electric dipole is defined by the first-order term of the multipole expansion; it consists of two equal and opposite charges that are infinitesimally close together. This is unrealistic, as real dipoles have separated charge.

THE EXPRESSION FOR THE POTENTIAL ENERGY OF ELECTRIC DIPOLE IN A ELECTRIC FIELD

The potential energy is -P*E*cos(theta) where P is the dipole moment, E is the electric field and theta is the angle dipole makes with the field.

Also in this case we take theta=90° as a point of zero potential energy(reference).

Else the actual formula is for the potential energy stored when dipole is taken from angle theta1 to angle theta2 , i.e., U (potential energy)= PE{ cos(theta1) -cos(theta2) }..

hope it's helps u...yo!!!
