Glucose breakdown occurs in three different ways explained below
The three ways of breakdown are - aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration and fermentation.
Aerobic respiration occurs in presence of oxygen. The process is seen in mitochondria, cytoplasm. The breakdown products are pyruvic acid and ATP.
Anaerobic respiration occurs in absence of oxygen. Process occurs in yeast and products formed are ethanol, carbon dioxide and ATP.
Fermentation is also anaerobic condition, but the products formed differ from latter. The process is also called lactic acid fermentation and is seen in muscle cells. The products are lactic acid and ATP.
